Activities resume at Centre

For over 3 weeks, children from the Klang Leu neighborhood have been able to return to Centre. What joy, laughter and relief for all concerned. It had been over 9 months since the children had been able to return to school or take part in group activities at Centre . And even though the children had been picking up their meals every day for all those months, community life at Centre is important to them, offering them a safe place away from the dangers of the street and a haven of peace.

50 children now come to Centre every day; they are divided into 2 groups. We hope that, with the relaxation of distancing measures and the reorganization of school hours, these groups will be able to expand in the next few weeks.

Between breakfasts, gourmet meals prepared by Tevi and Liya, activities (games, arts, sports, crafts and gardening), as well as all the English, Khmer, math and IT lessons, not forgetting hygiene, showers and other informal moments, the children see time go by very quickly when they are at Centre.

Reopening of Cambodia and easing of access conditions

With the gradual reopening of Cambodia and the easing of access and quarantine conditions, we hope to welcome new volunteers to the country for various missions from January 2022! Stay tuned! Mission proposals will follow shortly.

If you already have an idea for a project to be developed within a humanitarian structure, and would like to live an incredible human experience, write to us!

In brief in the news
Car wash, lice hunt and laundry!

We told you all about it in the previous newsletter... Liya, our super nanny, was on the starting blocks, waiting with bated breath for the children when they turned up at Centre on the day of the reopening. None of them could escape a long shower, soaping up, brushing their teeth and cutting their nails! It's important to remember that the majority of parents never offer their children the chance to wash, for lack of means, infrastructure and also because for some it's not part of their daily routine, and they didn't learn it when they were children themselves. Some hadn't showered in weeks.... Yes, yes, you read that right, for weeks! Oops!

Liya, who is a stickler for hygiene, also organized some major lice hunts! We won't name the winners of the "who's got the most lice" competition ..... For the volunteers and friends who visited Centre, this is a moment that will always be remembered.

All the children then helped with the big wash. What a joy it was for them to feel fresh and wear clean clothes!

At the table: cooking classes with Tevi, our Master Chef 👩‍🍳

Tevi has started up cooking classes again with the older children. The new dishes are taught in two stages: one session during which the children observe, ask questions and help Tevi with the preparation, and then a second session during which the children reproduce the recipe on their own, based on what they have learned. All the children at centre then take part in the tasting and give their opinions on the dishes prepared.

Last week, the children prepared a dessert based on beans, coconut milk, corn flour, sugar and pandan leaves. What a treat!

"A garden, even a small one, is the gateway to paradise" (Marie Angel)

Over the last few days, the rains have lessened in intensity and frequency, allowing Viva and the young gardeners to start cleaning up the small plot at the back of Centre and reorganizing it for planting over the next 6 months. None of the children spared any energy in tidying up the area, which in a few weeks' time will look like a lovely vegetable garden once again. As well as learning gardening techniques and how to maintain a vegetable garden, this area will provide fresh vegetables, roots and fruit that will become part of the daily diet. The quantities harvested do not cover 100% of plant consumption, and trips to the market are still compulsory, but what pride and stars in the eyes of the children when they harvest what they have sown.

Petits Geeks à Klang Leu: computer classes resume

For the past 2 weeks, the children have been coming back for introductory courses in computer use. These sessions take place on Saturdays and Sundays. Our highly motivated little geeks are divided into 2 groups of different levels and take part in 2 classes over the weekend. The next few weeks will be devoted to getting to grips with the computer and refreshing their skills. The children will then be able to move forward with the program established for the next 12 months, and progress in their learning and practice.

Kosmokrators Rebetikos: 4 singers and musicians with big hearts join forces for EKL

On October 30, our friends from Kosmokrators Rebetikos gave a wonderful concert in Brussels in aid of our association. The 4 joyful musicians and singers once again offered a magnificent musical evening full of color and good humor!
A huge thank you for their renewed generosity and for sharing their passion.

Food support and family assistance

Social and food poverty are abysmal among some families in the Klang Leu district! Without income for more than a year, families go to centre to collect the basic foodstuffs without which no meal could be served at home. Supplementary milk is distributed to the young mothers every month. The 3 young babies are thriving and growing.
You make the difference in the lives of children and their families!
Thank you for continuing to make this possible.

See you soon for the next adventures of Enfants de Klang Leu
