Vaccination continues in Cambodia and Klang Leu Adults and children aged 6 and over can receive their double dose of covid19 vaccine. Children are required to show their vaccination card in order to attend school. At Centre, almost all children of vaccination age were able to go to school, where medical teams were waiting for them. As for our team on site, they have all been vaccinated for several months, so as to be protected and able to welcome the children to our haven of joy.

Progressive reopening of schools in Cambodia and of Centre in Klang Leu The Ministry of Education has set up a process for the gradual reopening of schools throughout Cambodia. enfants de Klang Leu should be able to return to school from November 1, alternating every other week. The reopening of Centre will be in line with this timetable. The whole team is currently hard at work organizing the children's testing, and defining the groups of children who will be welcomed alternately, either in the mornings or afternoons, in order to limit contact. We are also delighted to be able to allow children to have breakfast and lunch on site, rather than having to collect a lunch box each day. Some of the children have already informed us that they would like to start cooking lessons again with Tevi, our chef. Liya is on the starting blocks for the big clean-up, the shower, the teeth brushing and the lice hunt! So much lather and laughter in store! We also know that the children can't wait to get back to Centre to enjoy play, art, crafts, gardening and other activities. For some, the return to a setting where the rules of life and interaction are not those of the streets, will be difficult and will require a great deal of patience and listening on the part of the team members. For these same children and others, the return to Centre means finally finding one's own rhythm as a child, with all the security and lightness needed at this time of life. Due to the limited access to online courses for the poorest children, our activities will integrate more Khmer language support courses - writing and reading - as well as mathematics courses. The team is preparing revision sheets and fun activities based on this basic content, which many children have not mastered up to the 6th grade. We will of course keep you informed of the progress of the resumption of activities at Centre , and will certainly have plenty of children's smiles to share with you in the coming weeks. And... we're keeping our fingers crossed that this announced reopening will be real, and this time for the long haul.

In brief : Food distributions and assistance to families continue! Since February, the team has been tirelessly preparing and delivering lunch boxes to the children who pass by Centre. In recent months, the team has packed and distributed tons of rice, hundreds of kg of fruit and vegetables, hundreds of liters of oil, soy sauce, drinking water, dozens of packets of sugar, loads of noodles, dried fish and fresh eggs. Families who have been out of work for more than a year have no other recourse than to contact our team to receive basic foodstuffs and be able to fill everyone's bellies. We know that this period of great social and food poverty will be resolved very slowly. You make the difference in the lives of children and their families!

Thanks to you, Lisa's new home is built

Once again, the team stepped in to bring a family to safety and enable them to live in a decent place. Lisa dreamed of sleeping in a bigger, healthier house, with her own mattress and a solid roof over her head to protect her from the heavy rains at this time of year. Having an elevated house is not a luxury in some neighborhoods, as it keeps the contents of the house dry during the rainy season, and also provides shelter from any snakes that won't hesitate to visit from time to time where the chickens and their chicks are running around.

We're delighted to be able to add to the happy troop of "pirates" at our Centre.

Summer-born twins Sovann Vichea and Sovann Socheat were presented to us a few weeks ago by their very proud, very happy and also very tired mother! After analyzing the family's social and financial situation, we decided to help the mother by providing her two children with supplementary milk. The alternation of feedings and bottles will enable her to rest more regularly and be more available for her 2 babies, who will also receive the volume of meals and nutrients needed for their growth.

Valérie Marin a embarqué comme bénévole au sein de l’équipe EKL fin 2019. Grâce à elle,  notre site web a été relooké et redynamisé. Une superbe prouesse réalisée par quelqu’un qui n’avait aucune formation dans le domaine, mais un cœur tellement grand et une motivation tellement belle que rien n’a pu l’arrêter !

Qui es-tu Valérie?
« Je suis française d’origine lyonnaise mais je vivais à Bordeaux quand ma carrière professionnelle m’a amenée à quitter la France en 1993 pour aller vivre au Bangladesh ou j’y ai passé 2 ans. Ensuite j’ai vécu 1 an à Hong Kong et en 1997, mon conjoint et moi nous sommes installés à Singapour. Nous y avons passé les 24 dernières années où nous sommes devenus résidents permanents et avons élevé nos deux enfants. J’ai fait des études de commerce international et ai commencé ma carrière dans les achats textile en Asie. Depuis 10 ans je dirige la filiale d’une société française spécialisée dans le complément alimentaire naturel. J’ai aussi obtenu un diplôme de coach en nutrition holistique avec une spécialité en santé digestive et hormonale. Le domaine de l’alimentation, de la santé et de la cuisine plus particulièrement me passionnent. Je suis une femme très active, je m’intéresse à beaucoup de choses, mais je dois dire que ce que j’aime le plus c’est cuisiner et partager cette passion avec les autres».
 
Pour quelles raisons t’es-tu impliquée en faveur de l’association et quel a été ton vécu de la création de son site internet ?
« J’ai adoré faire le site web de l’association. Je suis partie de rien. Je n’ai pas de formation en digital mais j’avais un peu appris quelques bases avec mon propre site… au fur et à mesure j’ai découvert de nouvelles fonctions, comment faire certaines choses et je dois dire que cela m’a passionné. J’aime la création et apprendre des nouveautés. Au départ je pensais faire un site très simple et puis finalement j’ai appris à me servir de l’outil WordPress, construire les pages web et diversifier les visuels. Un site internet c’est aujourd’hui une carte de visite et la première impression qu’une personne peut se faire d’une société, d’une personne, d’une marque, ou même d’une association.
Véhiculer une bonne image, quelque chose de sérieux, clair et agréable à lire est donc très important et je suis tellement contente d’avoir pu contribuer à apporter ceci a l’association. J’ai passé des nuits sur le site à essayer des choses, découvrir des fonctions, et voir le projet avancer était tellement excitant ! Le site et les réseaux sociaux c’est la voix des enfants pour que le monde les entendent ! Ma motivation c’était aussi d’apporter ma contribution pour que l’association dépense peu d’argent pour un site… car cela peut vite représenter un gros budget.
Quelle joie de m’impliquer sur ce projet car c’était du concret, nous partions de rien pour ce qui était du digital et surtout c’est pour une bonne cause… Je connais les personnes en charge de l’association et je sais que les contributions financières vont vraiment là où elles doivent et sont bien utilisées pour aider les familles et les enfants du village. La transparence et l’authenticité sont très importantes pour moi. C’est une organisation à taille humaine, avec peu de moyens, où tout le monde donne de son cœur et de son temps malgré des vies bien chargées. Ce qui m’a aussi beaucoup touché c’est toutes ces familles que l’association aide, ces enfants qui n’ont presque rien mais qui sourient sur toutes photos que j’ai visionnées et traitées lorsque nous faisions les sélections pour le site.
Au cours de mes années en Asie, j’ai beaucoup vu la misère, surtout quand je vivais au Bangladesh mais aussi au Cambodge, ou nous avons fait avec mon mari et mes enfants, des voyages humanitaires pour aider à construire des maisons dans des villages.
Nous avons la chance d’avoir une vie confortable, de ne manquer de rien, et il est vrai qu’en Asie, lorsque l’on voyage nous sommes souvent confrontés à cette dure réalité que beaucoup ne sont pas aussi chanceux que nous. Faire un don, même un petit a une grande valeur. Tous les petits dons mis bout à bout forment une somme qui fait une réelle différence et contribue à aider les moins fortunés à accéder à ce qu’il y a de plus basique dans la vie: une alimentation équilibrée, des soins médicaux et un lieu de vie décent. Ceci est encore plus vrai en cette période de pandémie.
Mais l’humanitaire c’est aussi toutes et tous les volontaires de l’équipe EKL qui contribuent de leur personne pour que tout fonctionne, récolter des dons, s’occuper des enfants et des familles, gérer le centre, gérer les finances, gérer la communication, … et cette contribution aussi n’a pas de prix »

Louis Bonte, currently in his final year of a Master's 2 engineering degree at IMT Nord-Europe (formerly Mines de Douai), has been doing an internship with our EKL association for the past 5 months.
Initially, Louis was supposed to spend his entire internship at Klang Leu, with the children and the team, but the health situation has somewhat "changed the game", so Louis has fulfilled his contract by telecommuting.
His many contributions include research work to define and implement best practices in gardening, composting and maintenance of a new henhouse. This work was carried out in part with the help of Cambodian agricultural engineers. Louis also produced training materials for Klang Leu team members and led remote sessions with them. Curious and motivated, Louis was also actively involved in developing our communication materials.

On September 24, 2021, it organized a charity and sports event at the Charles Péguy secondary school in Tourcoing. The theme of the event was good health through diet and regular exercise.
Between lectures to raise awareness of healthy eating and relay races, the schoolchildren got down to work for a good cause. Each kilometer covered was sponsored by families and friends, and the money raised was donated to the association.

This sporting and charity event on September 24 was the culmination of the human experience that motivated him at the start of his commitment.
