Hello everyone,

Here is the Newsletter for July and August 2021.
Find out what's been happening at Klang Leu this summer.

Enjoy your reading 😉

As elsewhere in the world, the Covid epidemic continues to affect Cambodia. At Centre, life is even more difficult, given the floods of recent days.

We continue to provide much-needed food aid and have integrated new families into our program. We don't forget personal and dental hygiene, and take care of medical emergencies.

Headlines

Flood alert across Cambodia and particularly in Sihanoukville!

Heavy rains have fallen across Cambodia and Sihanoukville has suffered terrible flooding in several districts.
Klang Leu, located on the city's heights, has so far been less affected by the torrents of muddy water. However, the contents of our vegetable garden have been washed away. This represents a serious loss in terms of the food support we offer families. Above all, it means that the team will have to buy more vegetables at the market while the vegetable garden is being restored.
Some of the neighborhood's residents are standing in water, but are safe for the time being.
We are still expecting heavy rains over the next few days; the team remains alert and available for families living in very precarious housing. These are made of sheet metal and wooden planks, and are unlikely to withstand the violence of further flooding or mudslides.

Health situation and impact on children's schooling: recovery postponed yet again!

As you know, due to the increase in cases of Covid 19, all the country's schools and shelters for poor children and families, such as the one in Klang Leu, have been closed since February 2021.
In 2020, children had access to school facilities for 6 months, but since January 2021, children have only attended classes for 4 weeks. Unfortunately, the 500 daily cases of Covid 19 will not allow schools to be opened quickly.

The health crisis is widening the gulf between rich and poor, not only financially but also in terms of education.
Despite the online courses provided by the national education system, access to school content remains difficult for children in general, but even more so for disadvantaged children in neighborhoods like Klang Leu. Some families don't have an Internet subscription due to lack of funds, and parents who own a smartphone can't necessarily share it between the children in the household.

For those who do have access, the fact that they are not in a school setting means they can turn away from these learning moments to surf more entertaining sites. Parents who have not themselves started or completed their basic schooling understand neither the stakes nor the dangers of a lack of schooling.
Refresher courses and tutoring will be crucial when school resumes and centre opens. A major project awaits all those involved in education, and at Centre de Klang Leu we intend to be part of it.

News of the last few weeks :

Lunch boxes and food distribution

The team continues to provide the children with their daily rations via lunch boxes. This is an important time to maintain close contact, chat with them for a few moments and check if they have any family worries or health problems.

Food support distributions to families increased in July and August. We are helping 40 more families than the 60 we already support.
100 families helped, that's nearly 500 people who can eat regularly and properly.
Some of our distributions have reached volumes unthinkable just a few months ago. In the first week of July, for example, we distributed: 2,500 kg of rice, 100 kg of sugar, 100 kg of dried fish, 3,000 packets of noodles, 300 bottles of fish sauce and 5,000 masks. All this has obviously made a huge difference to the daily lives of these destitute families.
Hundreds of soaps have been given to children and families, to take care of their personal hygiene and protect themselves from Covid 19.

Our food distributions are regular, and can only be made possible thanks to all your support.

Dental hygiene and good health! Klang Leu lathers up 😉

The team regularly reintroduces the good dental hygiene routine to the children, whether when they come to centre to pick up their lunch, or when visiting families in non-quarantined areas.

Under Liya's eagle eye, the children have to achieve a perfect brushing.

Everyone received new toothbrushes, toothpaste and soaps for the coming weeks.

Emergencies and medical care: Kom Kom pulls out all the stops!

Our little Kom Kom had a fall while playing and unfortunately injured himself when he bumped into some nails! Thanks to the team's rapid intervention, he was able to access the medical care he needed. The wound was treated, and a tetanus booster and antibiotics were administered. Kom Kom will have the necessary medical follow-up until the wound has healed.

During this period of pandemic and closure of centre, all children and families continue to benefit from access to useful medical care and treatment, and this is thanks to all your donations!

Pink notebook and happiness in these difficult times

We are delighted to announce that little Nen Phally Ny has joined the merry band of children at centre.
The food support given to her family will be supplemented each month with baby milk. This will enable the mother to reduce breastfeeding and rest while her baby continues to receive the nutrients she needs.
Welcome and long life to Nen Phally Ny!

New families welcomed and supported by EKL

Our team is relentless in its efforts to identify families at risk and integrate them into the families we help.

For several weeks now, the Lo family and their 3 children have been receiving our food aid: rice, noodles, dried fish, sugar, oil, fruit and vegetables are supplied to them every month. The 2 boys Makara (11) and Vannak (5) come to centre every day to collect the lunch boxes. Their little sister Srey Phea (3) stays at home with her father, who is very ill, while their mother does some cleaning and laundry in restaurants and with families who pay her a little. Unfortunately, this very uncertain type of work doesn't allow this family to pay the rent for their home and provide for the 3 children's basic needs.

The Thy family and their 6 children, Reaksmey (F - 13 years old), Maraka (M - 11 years old), Rachana (F - 8 years old), Tola (F - 5 years old), Panha (M - 4 years old) and BrosPov (M - 2.5 years old) were also spotted by the team and have been receiving food and medical support from the association for the past month. The parents worked on construction sites until the health crisis broke out. Since then, they have had very little income, which they obtain by working a few hours for the local fishermen. The family's situation has deteriorated in recent months, following the reinforced lockdowns, and they now live in extreme poverty: the children do not have enough to eat, and the whole family lives in insalubrious accommodation.
