Today, June 12, was World Day Against Child Labor.
Worldwide, more than 160 million child "workers" were counted in 2020 by the International Labor Organization. These figures are unfortunately on the rise! (1)
Of these 160 million working children, 40% live in South-East Asia.
- In Cambodia, 1 in 10 children are put to work by their parents from the age of 7 so that the whole family can eat and live!
In 2020, more than 313,000 children in Cambodia have been identified as victims of drug trafficking and prostitution.
Working and trafficking deprive them of their childhood and education, prevent them from developing their full potential, damage their physical and mental health and rob them of their dignity.
At Klang Leu, thanks to all our educational, pedagogical, nutritional, medical, recreational and social actions, we are helping to reduce the number of child laborers and thus give them access to a better future. Even if centre is still closed due to the Covid19 health crisis, the team is still working tirelessly to cover all the basic and vital needs of the children and their families.
And because all the children have dreams, for today and for their future, we asked them to draw what they would like to do as a job.

Health situation in Cambodia: schools and care centers still closed!
It's been 4 months since all schools and care centers like the one in Klang Leu were closed; no gatherings of children are currently allowed.
The number of daily cases is gradually decreasing in the major cities, but too slowly for the government to relax strict containment and distancing measures. Quarantines and neighborhood closures are still imposed when there are sick people or suspected contamination. Fortunately, in Klang Leu, no cases of covid have yet been detected in our neighborhood or among the families we support.
Team members continue to mobilize every day to organize the provision of balanced meals for the children; the lunch box system has been part of our routine for several months and is working very well; parents also drop by centre once a week or every fortnight to pick up their food parcels.
Thanks to your renewed generosity, we have been able to help more families and more children over the past 2 months. As you will recall, we added 27 new families to the group of 60 we already support in Klang Leu.
All these families are still in desperate need of our and your support. Without it, they cannot provide for their children's basic needs.
